A great way to begin your high altitude adventure in the Indian Himalayan Mountains. If you are preparing for a trek our way of acclimatization is fun! Begin in Leh, Ladakh in the heart of the Indus Valley. Travel to the Nubra Valley over the Khardung La - 5,679m (18,632 ft) one of the highest motorable roads in the world, explore the ancient Diskit Monastery, trek through sand dunes complete with Bactrian Camels in a valley at 3,155m (10,350 ft.), and visit a spectacular salt water lake at 4,267m (14,000 ft) above sea level!
Leh Highlights Tour Itinerary
Day 1 - Fly from Delhi to Leh – all flights leave early from Delhi. Go to the guesthouse for a Ladakhi breakfast. Spend the day exploring Leh town, visit the Leh palace and meet some of the local Ladakhi people selling their vegetables in the bazaar. In the evening climb up to Shanti Stupa for a sunset view of Leh and the surrounding mountains. Stok Kangri at 6,153m (20,187 ft) is also in the skyline.
As an alternative to flying from Delhi, traveling from Manali to Leh by road is also an option which actually aids in acclimatization and is worth the drive because of the views and landscape.
Day 2 - Go by vehicle to Shey and then walk to the Thikse Gompa and explore the numerous rooms, see the artwork that tells their stories and get a glimpse of what life is really like in a Buddhist Gompa.
Day 3 – Travel over the Kardung La – one of the highest motorable passes in the world 5,359m (18,632 ft). Next explore the Disket Gompa – founded in the 14th century and learn some interesting history. (At times of attack it was used for the protection of their King!)
Day 4 – Enjoy a morning walk through the sand dunes and ride a Bactrain camel if you like! Amazing – a desert at an elevation above 3,000m (9,842 ft) – complete with camels! Drive back to Leh. If you would like to ride a mountain bike down to Leh from Kardung La that can also be arranged!
Day 5 – Travel by vehicle to the start of your trek or head off to the next stage of your adventure in India!
A trip to Pangong Lake can be added or substituted in.
Pangong lake is a salt water lake that is over 134km (82 miles) long at an elevation of 4,249m (13,940 ft) Beautiful!!
