Trek from Pang to Hemis - Across Karnak
Start the trek at Pang on the Leh – Manali Highway. Elevation 4,490m. Travel down the course of the Toze Cho river for 2 days. Turn to follow the Zara river to Kharmak. It is like walking through a huge rock temple. Kharmak is a nomad village that is deserted during the summer months. Then, go up through a very interesting gap in the rock cliffs and over the high plains to Langmotche – another deserted village. Cross the Yar La Pass (4919m) and travel down to the village of Dat. During the summer there are only a few people in this village that has been built up around a very small Buddhist Gompa. Walk through an absolutely amazing canyon and camp by the river in between the stunning rock walls. The next day go through another amazing gap in the huge rocks and start toward the base camp for the next pass. Cross Zalung Karpo La Pass (5158m). The 360 degree view is stunning! Hike down to the next camp. An easy day walking to another absolutely stunning camp with amazing views both up and down the valley. Hike down along the river for another half hour and then turn right to head toward Nimaling. Lunch at a small lake at 4649m that reflects the snow covered peaks whenever there is no wind. Continue on to Nimaling. Climb up to the Konmaru La Pass (5244m) and enjoy the view before heading down into another amazing canyon. The rocks are red and green and it seems that you are coming down into a different world.
Camp at Chukirmo. Have a leisurely breakfast and then walk the final two hours to Shang Sumdo. From Shang Sumdo ride to Hemis or to Leh – about an hour’s drive. Enjoy lunch and a hot shower at the guest house and then in the evening head out for Pizza! Alternatively you can go all the way from Nimaling to Shung Sumdo in one long day and have your shower and pizza one evening earlier – but that makes for a full 7 hours of strenuous walking.
Because of the length of this trek and the distances to walk each day we recommend adding one or two days to rest along the way – the beauty is worth taking the time just to relax.
